Humans really didn’t belong on the Galactic Council.
When they were gifted free energy via a hyper-fusion device, it was over a dozen tries before enough safeguards and network infrastructure were functional and thorough enough so that it didn’t blow up in their face.
The first device was weaponized within 3 months of it’s arrival on Earth. This was made impossible for subsequent models after the first was destroyed and almost a continent along with it.
Safeguards which didn’t stop the second one from being used, primarily, to make weapons instead. A feedback pulse was used to depower the war-machines and so ended the second device.
When the power output was modified so as to make the approach more trouble than it’s worth – the third device was reverse engineered, unsuccessfully, and also ruined.
The forth through sixth devices were bought up by private collectors, who didn’t actually do anything productive with it. They are still being monitored and are set to power down if ever actually used to do more than illuminate a building.
The seventh device was made immovable and the area was subsequently surrounded by warring factions in a stalemate – since this device was also able to power down outside means of destruction – which would have been meaningful if any machinery made to harness the power made it past the factions guardians.
An eighth device was put into a high orbit to beam down power. However numerous satellites were made by the humans to intercept the beam and subsequently try and charge people downstream of it. A small orbital war erupted and nearly took out another continent with debris.
